FT-IR Fourier Transform Infra Red Spectroscopy This is a powerful tool used to characterise and identify polymers and materials which can be mixed with them. The technique is not only ideal for identifying which species are present, but can, in certain circumstances also be used to identify the ratio of the materials present and the presence of contaminants.
DSC Differential Scanning Microscopy Is a technique which measures the heat flows associated with thermal transitions in a material. The difference in the amount of heat required to increase the temperatures of a sample and a reference are measured as a function of temperature. Only a few milligrams of material are required for a test. This technique is often used to determine properties of the material including materials stability, crystallization performance, phase changes, melt stability and glass transition characteristics.
TGA Thermogravimetric Analysis Is a technique which measures the change in weight of a sample as a function of time, of a sample as it is subject to elevated temperatures. The temperature may be constant, or may itself be varying as a function of time. It is used to characterise the thermal degradation of a polymer and its fillers. It can indicate the behaviour of residual solvents within the polymer, and can characterise the behaviour of moisture within the sample.
TMA Thermomechanical Analysis Is a technique which measures the change in a particular dimension of a sample under load, as a function of temperature and time. The load is typically constant, but the temperature itself may be a function of time. It is often used to determine glass transition temperatures and thermal expansion coefficients of polymers.
GPC Gel Permeation Chromatography Is a technique which can be used to determine many aspects of the molecular weight characteristics of a sample including its average molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution.
